AI Songwriting Experiment

Let Me Watch My Show

The Inspiration

My wife had spent the day taking care of our two-and-a-half-year-old grandson. When she finally got him to sleep, she was ready to sit down, relax, and watch her show.

That was when the phone started ringing and the rest of the family began checking on her, stopping by, and asking questions. Everyone meant well, but after a long day, she really just wanted a little uninterrupted time to herself.

It was a small and very relatable family moment, so I decided to turn it into a song. The result was funny, specific, and more recognizable than I expected.

The Song

The Lyric Video

How It Came Together

I used ChatGPT to brainstorm the idea and develop the song lyrics, then used Suno to generate the music. I tried several different musical styles before settling on the version that best captured the tone.

For the artwork, I used ChatGPT to create a poster image that combined a real photograph with a described scene. I then used iMovie to add scrolling lyrics and export the finished project as an MP4 video. Finally, I used FFmpeg to reduce the video’s file size for the web.

Tools Used

What I Learned

One of the clearest lessons was the value of iteration. The same basic lyrics could feel very different depending on the musical style, and reaching the final version required trying several approaches and deciding which one best captured the original idea.

The AI tools made it much easier to move from a passing family moment to a finished song and video, but they did not eliminate the creative or production decisions. Selecting the music, shaping the image, timing the lyrics, exporting the video, and preparing it for the web still required a series of human choices.
